Bull Valley Dentistry Recommends Oral Appliance Therapy for Sleep Apnea

Posted December 21, 2015.

Oral appliance therapy is a type of treatment for people afflicted with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. The patient wears a removable oral appliance, specifically custom-made to form to the shape of their teeth and mouth. The appliance is worn while sleeping, and moves the tongue and lower jaw forward to open the airways for breathing.

How can you tell if you have sleep apnea?

  • If you have loud and chronic snoring
  • Loud snoring while sleeping on your back
  • Fighting sleepiness during the day
  • Falling asleep during the day
  • Morning headaches
  • Not being able to concentrate
  • Waking up often to go to the bathroom
  • Dry mouth or a sore throat upon awakening

What you can do if you have sleep apnea:

If you have mild to moderate sleep apnea, or if you cannot tolerate a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) device and you have severe sleep apnea, you may benefit from wearing one of our custom-made oral devices. These sleep apnea treatment mouth devices are cleared by the FDA, so you can rest assured the device is safe and effective. Another benefit to wearing one of these devices is that most insurances and Medicaid cover sleep apnea oral appliances.
